Research, business plans, prospectuses and more

Every course in entrepreneurship, bar none, states that no business should be begun without a thoroughly prepared business plan.

Why?
  • The process of preparing a plan requires research to support the idea
  • It forces you to explore all possible business contingencies and formulate solutions
  • Having a well written and comprehensive plan gives an owner confidence in their business idea
  • It is considerably easier to demonstrate the value of an idea to potential partners and participants with a plan they can examine
  • Plans are usually required by potential lenders
There are many ways to get a plan done, each has its pros and cons:

You can write it yourself
Being excited and very close to the idea, it can be very difficult to see any holes in it and be thorough. If you're not experienced in writing business documents, the language could feel unpolished to the reader.

Buy a template
A simple business concept that is like many others could be supported by one of the many templates you can purchase online. Templates require considerable customization to truly reflect your business. They fail to take into account geography and its business environment (local laws, competitors, etc.)

Hire a firm that specializes in plan writing
These companies know where to gather the information to back up the plan. As an outsider, they are a dispassionate consultant able to look at the flaws of the concept and work with you to find solutions. Practiced in business language, specialists will deliver a plan that reads like a professional document that is more apt to receive funding.
